There are many website developers in Nairobi and across Kenya, and quotes for what sounds like the same website can vary a lot. This checklist helps you compare them on what actually matters to your business, so you choose on substance rather than on the lowest number.

1. Look at live websites, not just screenshots

Ask for links to websites the company has built and open them yourself, on your phone as well as a laptop. Check that pages load quickly, that the menus work on mobile, and that contact forms and buttons do what they say. A live site tells you far more than a mockup.

2. Ask exactly what the price includes

Two quotes are only comparable if they cover the same things. Ask whether the price includes:

  • How many pages, and who writes the content
  • Your domain name and hosting, and for how long
  • An SSL certificate, so the site loads securely over HTTPS
  • Contact forms, WhatsApp chat and Google Maps
  • Free support after launch, and what it costs afterwards

3. Check that it’s built for mobile first

Many of your customers will find you on their phones. A good developer designs for the small screen first and then scales up, rather than shrinking a desktop design.

4. If you sell online, ask about M-Pesa

For an online shop or a property site taking deposits, check that M-Pesa and card payments are included, along with order management and an admin dashboard you can use without calling the developer every time.

5. Make sure it’s ready for Google

Ask how the site will be set up for search: page titles and descriptions, fast loading, clean page addresses, and a sitemap submitted to Google Search Console. If you’re replacing an older site, ask how they’ll keep your existing pages and rankings, for example with redirects from old URLs.

6. Confirm you’ll own the website

Your domain should be registered in your business’s name, and you should receive the logins to your hosting and admin area. That way you’re never locked in if you later change provider.

7. Read independent reviews

Look at the company’s Google reviews and what clients say about communication, deadlines and support after launch, not only about how the site looks.

8. Expect a clear process

A reliable team will explain how the project runs, from understanding your goals through design and build to launch and training, and who you’ll speak to at each stage.

How Ndovubase approaches it
